2 Corinthians 4:7 / KJV

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

In 2 Corinthians 4:7, Paul reminds us that we carry the treasure of the gospel in earthen vessels, or in other words, our human bodies. Our bodies may be weak and fragile, but the treasure that we carry within us - the message of salvation through Jesus Christ - is powerful and life-changing. And it is through our weaknesses that God's power is made evident.

This concept is not new in the Bible. We see it throughout the Old and New Testaments. For example, when God chose Gideon to lead Israel against the Midianites, Gideon was hesitant and afraid. He said, "How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family" (Judges 6:15).

But God told Gideon, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive" (Judges 6:16). And indeed, Gideon led Israel to victory over their enemies, showing that it was not his own strength but God's power that accomplished the task.

Similarly, when the apostles were preaching the gospel after Jesus' resurrection, they were often met with opposition and persecution. Yet they continued to boldly proclaim the message of salvation, even when it put their lives at risk. As Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."

In all of these examples, we see that God's power is made evident through our weaknesses. When we rely on Him for strength and guidance, we are able to accomplish great things for His kingdom. As Paul wrote in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

But why does God choose to use our weaknesses to showcase His power? Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:7 that it is "that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." When we recognize that our strength comes from God alone, it humbles us and points others to Him. It reminds us that the treasure we carry within us is not our own, but a gift from God.

So, let us embrace our weaknesses and allow God's power to shine through us. Let us trust in Him to guide us and empower us to share the gospel message with those around us. And let us always remember that it is not our own strength, but His power, that accomplishes great things.

In conclusion, let us pray together: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the treasure of the gospel that we carry within us. Help us to recognize our weaknesses and rely on your strength to accomplish great things for your kingdom. May your power be made evident through us, so that others may come to know you and the salvation you offer. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
